Miss Mary Berry

Huckleberry is our neighbor’s basset hound’s name… so this pony mare has picked up the nickname “Mary Berry” after the beloved British Bake Off judge. Mary has proven to be quite curious, fun, sweet and quirky. She loves to rest her head on your shoulder and every day she is more relaxed. She and Arrow, my mustang, have become good pals after 24 hours of Arrow squealing at her.

Part of what I have been most excited about with Berry is being able to pony her along with Arrow on trail rides. We’re getting close! Today she ponyed quite well at the walk and trot and went over logs/cavaletti and around many obstacles. She really trusts Arrow and has enjoyed a few cookies along our practice ride around the paddocks. She followed us over a “tarp bridge” like a pro and enjoyed the little adventure. She’s worn her bareback pad and I’m looking forward to getting the saddle on her. She’s had one on at CHR so again, just working on being relaxed about the whole process. You can see her curiosity when I saddle up Arrow and I appreciate having a brave and solid mentor in Arrow.

Fostering so far has been a real treat- knowing that we are helping this sweet little mare have a brighter future and freeing up space and resources at the Colorado Horse Rescue in the meantime. It makes me think of the Starfish on the beach story when you think that a difference is being made for Mary Berry.

I’ve mostly been working at liberty with her to help her relax. At Colorado Horse Rescue she got a solid base but she reverts to being uptight easily, so repeated relaxing practice is helping her. She’s gotten her hooves rasped and conditoned, a goo…

She’s gotten her hooves rasped and conditoned, a good mane and tail detangling and a light sponge bath. It is fun to see her gain confidence each day.
